Christian Council forms committee to revive National Cathedral Project

The Christian Council of Ghana has constituted a technical committee to examine options for reviving the stalled National Cathedral project and determine a practical path towards its completion.

The committee, comprising representatives from different Christian groupings, has been tasked with developing a workable funding framework within one month, while also making recommendations on the project’s location and other outstanding matters.

Chairman of the Christian Council of Ghana, Reverend Enoch Nii Narh Thompson, disclosed this to journalists after a closed-door meeting with the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.

He said the committee’s report would be submitted to President John Mahama to inform decisions on the future of the project.

“Under this council, within a month, we will discuss issues relating to the practical intervention of funding, location and other things pertinent to the National Cathedral. So, we will within the month present the recommendations and expect the necessary decisions to be taken.”

The Council has also urged authorities to conclude the forensic audit into the National Cathedral project without further delay.

According to the Christian Council, the outcome of the audit would provide Christian leaders with the information needed to properly assess the circumstances surrounding the project and determine the way forward.

The National Cathedral initiative was announced in 2017 by then-President Nana Akufo-Addo as a national centre for Christian worship and heritage. The project was formally commissioned in 2018, followed by groundbreaking ceremonies in 2019.

However, funding difficulties and construction challenges have stalled the project, which remains incomplete. The situation has prompted renewed demands for transparency regarding its financing and a clear decision on its future.
