Learn from Dr Osei Adutwum instead of dismissing his record – Kwasi Kwarteng to Haruna Iddrisu 

Former Public Relations Officer at the Ministry of Education, Kwasi Kwarteng, has urged Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu to humble himself and learn from his predecessor, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, in addressing Ghana’s education challenges.

His comments come amid renewed debate over the implementation of the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy, the double-track system and the ongoing challenges with the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS).

Speaking on Accra-based TV3's New Day show on Friday, September 11, the Tamale South MP argued that the previous administration expanded access to secondary education without providing adequate infrastructure to accommodate the resulting increase in enrolment.

His comment comes after the former Education Minister criticised the currenht administration's handling of the school placement which has seen thousands of students struggling for access.

Reacting to the development in an interview on Accra-based GHOne TV on the same day, Kwarteng said the double-track system was introduced as an innovative response to the sharp increase in demand for senior high school places following the introduction of Free SHS.

According to him, the policy helped prevent thousands of students from being denied access to secondary education when enrolment increased significantly.

“You need to humble yourself. There’s nothing wrong in being humble and learning from others, and I think you should have that ability to learn from anyone,” he told the Minister.

The former Education Ministry PRO also rejected the Minister's argument that the previous administration introduced STEM education without adequate policy direction.

He said Ghana’s education system must be assessed based on access, quality and relevance, rather than through partisan considerations.

He argued that the global education system is increasingly focused on science, technology, engineering and mathematics and which means Ghana could not afford to delay implementation while waiting for additional policy frameworks.
