Christian Council forms technical committee to determine way forward for National Cathedral

The Christian Council of Ghana has announced plans to establish a technical committee to explore the way forward for the stalled National Cathedral project.

The committee will comprise representatives from various Christian groupings and will examine key issues surrounding the project, including funding and the proposed location.

Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Friday, September 11, Chairman of the Christian Council, Rev. Enoch Nii Narh Thompson, said the committee is expected to complete its work within a month and submit its recommendations to the government.

“The technical committee will, within a month, discuss all the issues regarding the practical dimensions of funding and location and any other things pertinent to the National Cathedral project,” Rev. Thompson said.

He said the committee’s findings would first be presented to the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs further consideration before being forwarded to President John Mahama to guide decisions on the project.

Rev. Thompson expressed hope that the process would help bring an end to the prolonged uncertainty surrounding the National Cathedral project.

He also disclosed that the Christian Council had been informed by President Mahama during an earlier meeting that a forensic audit of the project had been instituted.

According to him, the Christian leadership believes the government should expedite the audit and make its findings available to the Christian community.

“The Christian Council has concluded that it will be pertinent for the government to speed up work on the forensic audit and to share with the Christian community leadership the outcomes,” he said.

He said the Christian community would study the findings of the audit and make further contributions to the national discussion on the project.

The National Cathedral project, initiated under the previous administration, has faced controversy over its financing, construction and management, with the current government yet to determine its final direction.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Local Government Mahama Ayariga has stated that he does not oppose the idea of building a National Cathedral and will support the project once the Christian community is committed to it and receives backing from the President.
