Ghana-Canada deepen talks on strengthening security cooperation

The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has expressed Ghana’s readiness to deepen security cooperation with Canada as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s security architecture and address emerging threats.

He made the commitment when the Canadian High Commissioner to Ghana, H.E. Myriam Montrat, visited him to discuss areas of mutual interest and explore opportunities for enhanced collaboration in peace and security.

The meeting provided an opportunity for the two sides to exchange views on emerging security challenges and the growing need for international cooperation to address threats that increasingly transcend national borders.

Mr Muntaka said countries could no longer effectively tackle security threats in isolation, stressing that stronger collaboration among nations was essential to protecting citizens and maintaining peace and stability.

He reaffirmed the Ministry’s willingness to work closely with its Canadian counterparts on initiatives to strengthen Ghana’s internal security systems.

The Minister noted that Ghana could benefit from strengthened cooperation and the sharing of expertise in areas relevant to border security, intelligence and other emerging security concerns

The discussions also focused on Canada’s experience in peace and security, particularly the role of the Canada Border Services Agency in border management and intelligence.

The meeting further highlighted existing cooperation between Canadian counterparts and key Ghanaian security institutions, including the Ghana Police Service, the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), the Ghana Immigration Service and other security agencies.

The engagements, the two sides noted, provide an important foundation for expanding Ghana-Canada security cooperation and improving the capacity of security institutions to respond effectively to evolving threats.

Both parties expressed their commitment to building on existing engagements and identifying practical areas of cooperation that would further enhance collaboration between Ghana and Canada in peace and security.
