Tano South MP rewards 300 top-performing BECE graduates

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Tano South, Charles Akwasi Asiedu, has supported 300 best-performing Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) graduates in the constituency to pursue Senior High School (SHS) education.

Of the 300 beneficiaries, 16 girls who obtained single-digit aggregates in the BECE received additional packages in recognition of their outstanding performance.

The remaining 15 students were selected from basic schools in the municipality.

The students received mattresses, chop boxes, exercise books, scientific calculators and an undisclosed sum under the Charles Asiedu Educational Support Initiative, instituted to support education and give needy and deserving students an opportunity to continue their education.

Benjamin Ayitey Ajavon of the Techimantia M/A Saviour Junior High School emerged the overall best student in the municipality, obtaining an aggregate seven with eight grade ones.

At the presentation last Monday, Mr Asiedu said since assuming office, he had made transparency and accountability a priority and was committed to using his position to drive development.

He said the interventions were intended to go beyond immediate assistance to constituents and create opportunities that would have a lasting impact on education, health care and skills development. Excellence award

Mr Asiedu said he had introduced the Charles Asiedu Academic Excellence Award to recognise high-performing basic schools and motivate them to improve their academic performance.

He said the initiatives had contributed to improved BECE performance in the municipality, with the number of students obtaining single-digit aggregates increasing significantly.

Mr Asiedu said his ambition was to support students to pursue professional programmes, particularly in law and medicine, as part of efforts to produce more professionals from the area.

He added that he had also instituted an award scheme for teachers and nurses to motivate them to improve teaching and learning as well as quality health delivery in the area. Development

The Ahafo Regional Minister, Charity Gardiner, described the initiative as the first of its kind in the region.

She said the MP had, within one-and-a-half years, demonstrated his commitment to bringing development to the municipality.

Mrs Gardiner congratulated the beneficiaries and advised them to be disciplined in their various schools and study hard to justify the confidence reposed in them by the MP and their parents. Critical attention

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Emmanuel Kwame Frimpong, said the development of every country depended largely on education and commended the MP for paying critical attention to the sector.

He said the MP had demonstrated a commitment to using his resources to support areas that were valuable to the people and expressed the hope that the number of beneficiaries would be increased to cover more students.
