The Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Mr Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has called on city authorities to maintain consistent and direct interaction with grassroots workers to ensure total compliance with municipal environmental bye-laws.
"City authorities must remain closely connected to the residents we serve and recognise the indispensable contributions that market women, street cleaners, and security personnel make to keeping Accra running daily. We must take care of those on the street,’’ he stated.
He made this statement when he and the Municipal Chief Executive for Korle Klottey, Mr Alfred Allotey Gaisie, engaged market women, street vendors, and public workers across central Accra to reinforce proper environmental sanitation practices.
The engagement, which formed part of activities marking the joint celebration of their birthdays, saw the two local government heads distribute 3,200 meal packs and drinks to traders, sanitation workers, security officers, and commuters across key commercial hubs in the capital.
The distribution exercise commenced along Kinbu Street, proceeding through the Aayalolo Bus Terminal, Tudu, the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) Station, Railways, and the Greater Accra Regional Police Headquarters, before concluding at COCOBOD.
He explained that the gesture aimed to encourage beneficiaries to actively participate in local government programmes, specifically the National Sanitation Day exercises and ongoing street-cleaning initiatives.
For his part, Mr Gaisie emphasised that strong collaboration between municipal assemblies and community stakeholders remains essential to achieving sustainable urban management, clean public spaces, and improved livelihoods within the capital.
Speaking on behalf of local traders, several beneficiaries expressed appreciation to the two Chief Executives, noting that improved trading conditions resulting from assembly interventions have enhanced their daily revenues and economic stability.
They praised the leaders for stepping out into the markets to hear their concerns directly, while offering prayers for their continued leadership and well-being.
