How dare we entertain boardroom fantasies about 5G speeds when the baseline 3G and 4G networks under our feet have completely collapsed? Between September 3rd and today, September 7th, 2026, the people of Atiwa Kwabeng have been plunged into a hellish, systemic communication blackout. Total internet failure and frozen network signals have effectively cut an entire district off from the modern world. For those of us on the ground, a multi-billion dollar promise is a useless piece of paper when you cannot even connect a basic, life-saving voice call today.

The Columnist's Nightmare: Silenced by Corporate Incompetence

As a columnist for the Modern Ghana platform, this is not just an objective critique—it is a deeply personal grievance born out of severe frustration:

·Complete Professional Sabotage: For five straight days, this hellish network made it utterly impossible for me to conduct basic web research, access reference materials, or connect to the digital tools required to write.

·Silencing the Press: The prolonged blackout completely blocked me from uploading, formatting, or publishing critical articles on Modern Ghana, effectively choking my voice as a journalist and disrupting my professional commitments.

·Paying for Dead Air: Like thousands of others, I am forced to watch hard-earned money drain into data bundles and voice packages that are completely unusable, with zero accountability or automatic recourse from the network provider.

The Reality on the Ground: Why the System is Rotting

The total collapse of service delivery in the Atiwa district exposes deep structural rot and a blatant lack of emergency preparedness:

·The Galamsey Weapon of Mass Disconnection: Illegal mining (galamsey) is an existential digital threat. Heavy earth-moving excavators in mining hubs like Kwabeng are systematically ripping through buried fiber-optic cables, causing a staggering 25% of all national network cuts with zero real-world consequences for the perpetrators.

·Halt the 5G Rollout Until 4G is Stabilized: The NCA must freeze permissions for flashy, elitist 5G expansions in wealthy urban enclaves until MTN proves that 3G and 4G networks in rural and peri-urban production hubs like Kwabeng are 100% stable.

·Mandate Automatic Customer Financial Compensation: If a district suffers a network blackout exceeding two hours, the law must compel the telco to automatically credit 40% of the calculated regional loss directly back into the accounts of affected subscribers as airtime and data—no complex filing processes required.
