Aggressive Big Push road projects responsible for 49% of Ghana’s fibre cuts – Sam George

Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations Minister Sam Nartey George has disclosed that government’s Big Push road projects account for nearly half of all fibre cuts recorded across Ghana.

According to the Minister, road construction activities under the Big Push programme are responsible for about 49% of fibre cuts, making the projects the single largest source of damage to the country’s telecommunications infrastructure.

Ghana has recorded 8,578 fibre cuts in 2026, with telecommunications companies spending more than US$20 million to repair the damaged infrastructure.

“That’s money that without the fibre cut we could have used to build new sites… The biggest source of fibre cuts is from the Big Push project because the Ministry of Roads is carrying out an aggressive project to construct roads across the country,” he said.

Sam George said the substantial amounts being spent on repairing damaged fibre could instead be channelled into expanding network coverage and establishing new telecommunications sites.

He said the situation had persisted for several years, with Ghana recording about 3,900 fibre cuts in 2021, more than 10,000 in 2022, over 6,000 in 2023 and more than 5,600 in 2024.

The number increased again to about 8,000 fibre cuts in 2025.

By the end of June 2026, nearly 4,300 fibre cuts had already been recorded, putting the country on course to record close to 9,000 by the end of the year if the current trend continues, the Minister said.
