Anti-galamsey campaigner found dead in suspected suicide at Assin Amoabeng

A 52-year-old anti-illegal mining campaigner and spiritualist, Baba Ibrahim, popularly known as Alhaji Nagode, has been found dead in an apparent suicide incident at Assin Amoabeng, a community near Nyankumase Ahenkuro in the Assin South District of the Central Region.

The incident reportedly occurred at about 6:40 a.m. on Monday, September 7, 2026, according to the deceased’s 14-year-old daughter.

She told authorities that her father had instructed her to take her younger sibling to school and return for money to buy food. However, when she returned about 30 minutes later, she found him hanging from a rope tied around his neck.

The teenager raised an alarm, prompting residents in the community to rush to the scene and assist her.

Alhaji Nagode was reportedly a spiritualist and farmer who had also been actively campaigning against illegal mining activities because of their impact on the environment.

The circumstances leading to his death remain unclear, although his daughter disclosed that he had been involved in a legal dispute with a man in the community. The case was reportedly scheduled to be heard on Monday, September 7.

The deceased, who had seven children, was reportedly no longer living with his wife. His youngest child is said to be five years old.

The sudden death has reportedly left members of his family in shock.

The Assembly Member for the area, Ekow Sadique Aidoo, confirmed the incident and said the matter had been reported to the police.
