Lawyer Kwame Owusu Danso has said Ghana’s Chief Justice, Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, did not break any rule by commenting on the performance of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs).
The Chief Justice has come under criticism after saying that Ghanaians sometimes wonder what had been done over the previous eight years when they hear how well some state organisations are now performing.
Speaking on Joy News, Owusu Danso said there was no specific rule that the Chief Justice had breached with the comment.
“To answer your question directly, there’s no rule which has been broken,” he said.
He said the issue was mainly one of morality and politics rather than a breach of a legal rule.
Owusu Danso also rejected the argument that the Chief Justice’s comments automatically showed political allegiance.
He said it was wrong to assume that anyone who expresses a view contrary to the position of the NPP must belong to the NDC.
“Ghana does not belong to the NDC and the NPP alone,” he said.
He pointed out that Ghana is a multi-party democratic country and people are free to belong to different political parties.
“People can belong to different political parties. Who knows, maybe the Chief Justice is even CPP. How would you know?” he asked.
Owusu Danso said people should be allowed to express their views without being labelled as members of either of the two major political parties.
He also argued that the Chief Justice, like any other Ghanaian, can hold and express views.
“The Chief Justice is a Ghanaian. And that’s the first principle,” he said.
