Military clears 170km corridor for Accra–Kumasi Expressway

The Ghana Armed Forces Engineers have cleared 170 kilometres of the 176-kilometre corridor designated for the proposed Accra–Kumasi Expressway, leaving only 6 kilometres to complete the exercise.

The latest progress signals that the corridor-clearing phase of the major road project is nearing completion, with the military engineering team continuing work on the remaining section towards Sawua.

In a post on X on Thursday, September 3, 2026, the Ghana Armed Forces said the exercise had entered its final stage and praised its engineers for successfully navigating and clearing difficult terrain.

“The finish line is in sight. Out of 176 kilometres of challenging terrain, just 6 KM REMAIN!” the Ghana Armed Forces stated.

The latest figure represents a significant improvement from the progress recorded earlier in the year. As of June 25, 2026, 89.5 kilometres, equivalent to 50.9% of the corridor, had been cleared.

The entire corridor-clearing exercise was originally expected to be completed within 20 weeks.

Clearing the corridor is an important preparatory activity for the Accra–Kumasi Expressway, as it establishes the required right of way ahead of the commencement of major construction works.

Once completed, the proposed expressway is expected to enhance connectivity between Accra and Kumasi, shorten travel times, reduce congestion and improve the movement of people and goods between the two major cities.
