History was made in the United States of America (USA), not in Manhyia. Glory to Ame.
Every sixth Sunday, the capital of Asante, Kumasi, holds Akwasidae, a sacred Akan festival honouring ancestors, the king, and the Golden Stool that is believed to hold the soul of the Asante people. This time, that sacred festival was held not in Kumasi, but to begin African Heritage Month in the USA.
For the first time on such a grand scale, the sacred drums of Asante sounded not in Adum, not in Kejetia, not in the forecourt of the Manhyia Palace, but at Bowie State University in Bowie, Maryland, USA. As Maryland Governor Wes Moore said at the durbar, “I'm overjoyed to celebrate with His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the 16th King of the Asante Kingdom.”
And yet, the spirit of Asante was more alive than ever.
This was Akwasidae on foreign soil. A sea of Kente straight from Bonwire. A forest of great royal umbrellas covering the American sky. The steady, soul‑stirring rhythm of the Fontomfrom and Atumpan. Our culture did not travel; it reigned.
This moment was deeper than a festival. Four hundred years ago, our ancestors were chained and sent to this same land as slaves. They came in pain, with no drums, no umbrellas, no Kente. Their blood, their sweat, their tears helped build America.
Today, their children returned, not in chains, but as Kings and Queens. Not in silence, but with drums. Not stripped of our culture, but draped in Bonwire Kente from head to toe.
Asante did not just visit the USA. Asante helped make the USA.
The Historic Akwasidae Festival in Bowie proved one timeless truth: Asanteman is not a place, it is a SOUL. From the looms of Bonwire where our Kente is born, to Bowie where it was proudly worn, the thread never broke—even across the ocean and across centuries.
Wherever we gather, Manhyia is there.
That afternoon in Bowie, Maryland ceased to be Maryland. It became Manhyialand.
We came full circle. From slaves to royals. From silence to drums. From loss to triumph.
Piawww!!! Asante Kotoko, wokum apem a, apem beba!
