Three HIV infections recorded daily in Western Region — Ghana AIDS Commission

About 23,000 people are estimated to be living with HIV in the Western Region, with the region recording an average of three new infections each day, according to the Ghana AIDS Commission’s latest HIV estimates and projections.

The figures are contained in the Commission’s 2025 HIV estimates and projections, released this year, and highlight the continued challenge of preventing new infections despite a slight decline in the rate of transmission.

Speaking to Channel One TV in Sekondi during an HIV/AIDS Stakeholders Review Meeting, the Western Regional Technical Coordinator of the Ghana AIDS Commission, Antonio Francis, said sustained efforts were needed to reduce new infections and keep Ghana on track towards ending AIDS by 2030.

He said the estimated number of people living with HIV in the region stood at more than 23,000, while new infections had declined slightly from previous estimates.

“Per the 2025 HIV estimates and projections which were done by the Ghana AIDS Commission and the report came out this year, we can say that for the Western Region, we have roughly 23,000 plus people that we estimate are living with the virus in the region.

“If you look at the rate of new infections, it has reduced slightly from somewhere around 992 persons newly infected with HIV.

“What this means is that, if you should do a further breakdown, it means that every day we are getting at least three people getting infected in the region.”

Mr. Francis cautioned that the continued occurrence of new infections could pose a challenge to Ghana’s target of ending AIDS by 2030 if stronger prevention and treatment interventions were not sustained.

He stressed the need for a combination of effective HIV treatment and multiple prevention strategies to further reduce transmission and protect gains made in the national response to the epidemic.
