A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Communications Team, Fiifi Boafo, has criticised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government’s approach to job creation.
He said the government’s approach to job creation must go beyond training people and claiming to have addressed unemployment.
According to him, government must provide the necessary tools, resources and systems to enable beneficiaries to translate acquired skills into sustainable livelihoods.
“Just by giving people the skills and it ends there, it is not enough. Beyond giving them the skills, what are the tools they need to work with?” he asked.
Speaking on Accra-based JoyNews’ AM Show on Wednesday, September 2, Fiifi Boafo said government programmes must also have effective monitoring and evaluation mechanisms to determine whether public funds are producing the intended results.
He argued that simply training people without following up to determine how they are using the skills amounts to poor value for money.
The NPP communicator said government must return to beneficiaries after a period to assess whether the training, equipment and other resources provided have helped move them from unemployment into sustainable employment.
He stressed that the same principle should apply to the implementation of the NDC’s 24-hour economy policy.
The NPP communicator stated that the government must demonstrate tangible results rather than merely making promises.
