Mahama cuts sod for seven-storey car park and commercial complex at Accra International Airport

President John Dramani Mahama has cut sod for the construction of a seven-storey multi-purpose car park and commercial complex at Terminal 3 of the Accra International Airport.

The project is expected to provide about 2,030 covered parking bays while adding commercial, entertainment and hospitality facilities to the airport environment.

Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony on Thursday, August 27, President Mahama said the development forms part of efforts to expand airport capacity and position Ghana as a preferred destination, convenient transit point and competitive aviation hub in Africa.

The President noted that passenger traffic at the airport had increased from 1.8 million in 2022 to 2.5 million in 2025, making the expansion of airport infrastructure necessary.

The multi-purpose complex will include commercial and retail spaces, offices, hospitality facilities and entertainment areas.

It is also expected to feature a pedestrian connection to the terminal, a sky lounge and a sky observatory that will allow visitors to watch aircraft land and take off.

Two hotels are also expected to form part of the wider development, providing accommodation within the airport environment.

President Mahama said the government’s objective goes beyond attracting more passengers, stressing the need to make Ghana’s aviation sector more competitive and convenient for travellers and businesses.

He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening aviation infrastructure and connectivity while calling for professionalism, discipline and courtesy across the sector.

The President disclosed that several ongoing and planned airport projects are being funded entirely from the balance sheets of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL).

These projects include the new GCAA control tower, refurbishment of Terminal 2, the transfer concourse connecting Terminals 2 and 3, and the new parking and commercial development at Terminal 3.

He said the projects are being undertaken without direct government funding.

The seven-storey car park is expected to provide more than 2,000 parking spaces, alongside a shopping mall with a food court, retail outlets and offices for rent.
