‎Two Decades of Service: Why Boakye Agyarko Deserves to Lead the NPP as National Chairman

When Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko filed his nomination this week to contest the National Chairmanship of the New Patriotic Party, it was not the opening chapter of a political career but the latest instalment in a story of service that stretches back nearly two decades to the day he walked away from a comfortable banking career in New York to fight for a party he had helped found from exile.

From political refugee to Wall Street executive

Agyarko's journey to the NPP's top table began long before the party itself existed in its current form. Born in Kumasi in 1956 to a United Party activist father, he studied Economics and Political Science at the University of Ghana, Legon, graduating in 1979. After a brief stint as a junior economist in Accra, an attempt on his life forced him to flee Ghana in 1984, and he emigrated to the United States as a political refugee.

There he rebuilt his life from the ground up, training in banking and rising over more than two decades at the Bank of New York America's oldest bank to become Vice President and Head of Global Network Management in its Investment Management and Services Division.

Leaving Wall Street for the NPP's frontline

It would have been easy for Agyarko to remain in that world of Wall Street comfort. Instead, in 2007 almost twenty years ago he resigned his position at the Bank of New York and returned home to campaign full-time for the NPP's presidential flagbearership ahead of the 2008 general election.

That decision to trade an American banking career for the uncertainty of Ghanaian opposition politics is the foundation on which his current bid for the National Chairmanship rests: a demonstrated willingness, at personal and financial cost, to place the party's fortunes above his own comfort.

Two decades of institutional service
In the years since, Agyarko has occupied nearly every rung of the party's ladder short of the very top. He served as Campaign Manager for the NPP's 2012 election bid and as a Policy Advisor for the 2016 campaign that returned the party to power.

President Nana Akufo-Addo appointed him Minister of Energy in 2017, a position he held until 2018. Throughout, colleagues and party elders alike have pointed to his grounding in the ideological lineage of the NPP and its forebear, the United Party, as a distinguishing qualification an institutional memory increasingly rare within the party's current leadership ranks.

A grassroots draft, not a personal ambition

What sets Agyarko's current bid apart is that it did not originate as a personal ambition but as a call answered. At the NPP's Constituency Chairmen Caucus Conference in Kumasi in 2025, chairpersons drawn from all sixteen regions interrupted his remarks to publicly plead with him to contest the National Chairmanship, with one declaring that "the party is at a crossroads" and needed an experienced hand like his to lead it .

Agyarko took months to consider the request, consulting his family and close associates before formally declaring his candidacy in September 2025 under the banner "A Call to Duty: NPP National Chairmanship". That grassroots momentum has since translated into tangible support: more than fifty constituency chairpersons and leaders of identifiable party groups purchased nomination forms on his behalf at NPP headquarters in Accra on 18 August 2026, while regional chairmen across the country have separately backed his candidature.

The case for his chairmanship
Supporters within the party frame the coming contest not merely as an internal contest for an executive post but as a referendum on whether the NPP can renew itself after two terms in government and the governance fatigue that followed.

Agyarko has assembled a campaign leadership team built on institutional depth, appointing former Greater Accra Regional Minister Henry Quartey as Campaign Manager and former First Deputy Speaker of Parliament Joseph Osei-Owusu as Senior Campaign Advisor.

His backers argue that as the party rebuilds its grassroots structures ahead of the 2028 general election in which the NPP will again field Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as its flagbearer it needs a chairman with the discipline, ideological grounding, and unifying credibility that only genuine sacrifice for the party over decades can confer.

Agyarko formally informed Bawumia of his decision to contest during a courtesy visit on May Day 2026, pledging his continued support for the former Vice President while stressing the need for party unity heading into the next election cycle .

For a party searching for renewal, Agyarko's candidacy is, in the words of his supporters, less a bid for power than the natural conclusion of a life already spent in service to the NPP from the exile that nearly cost him his life, through a Wall Street career sacrificed for opposition politics, to two decades of institutional loyalty now culminating in a call the grassroots themselves extended to him.
