A total of 50 aspirants have picked nomination forms to contest 11 national executive positions in the upcoming internal elections of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Although the party has nine distinct national executive roles, the National Vice Chairperson contest will produce three officeholders — First, Second and Third Vice Chairpersons — bringing the total number of national executive positions to 11.
National Chairman Race
By the close of nominations on Saturday, August 22, five aspirants had picked forms to contest the National Chairman position:
- Paul Afoko
- John Boadu
- Boakye Agyarko
- Sammy Crabbe
- Bernard Antwi Boasiako
Incumbent Chairman Stephen Ayesu Ntim is not seeking re‑election, having taken a temporary break in May 2025.
General Secretary Contest
Four aspirants will face off in the General Secretary race:
- Justin Kodua Frimpong (incumbent)
- Eugene Boakye Antwi
- Sylvester Tetteh
- Charles Dwamena
Communications Director Race
The National Communications Director contest now features two aspirants — Dennis Miracles Aboagye and Evans Kodo — following the withdrawal of Gordon Asare Bediako, who has endorsed Aboagye.
In a statement on Saturday night, Asare Bediako said his withdrawal followed “deep reflection, wide consultation… and prayerful consideration of what is best for the New Patriotic Party at this defining moment.”
He stressed that unity should take precedence over individual ambition and pledged his “full and unreserved support” for Aboagye.
Filing and Vetting
Filing of completed nomination forms begins Sunday, August 23, 2026, and ends Saturday, August 29, 2026.
Vetting will take place from Monday, August 31 to Thursday, September 3, 2026.
The party has not yet announced a date for balloting. According to a statement by Fred Opare‑Ansah, Chairman of the National Officers Elections Committee, the decision is deliberate to allow filing, vetting and appeals processes to conclude before fixing a firm date.
He explained that announcing a balloting date prematurely could lead to postponements if appeals affect the final list of qualified candidates.
