Anglique Kidjo Makes History as First Black African Honoured on Hollywood Walk of Fame

Five-time Grammy winner Angélique Kidjo has become the first Black African to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a milestone Africa's music community is calling long overdue for a continent whose sonic influence has shaped global popular music for generations.

The Benin-born icon, whose career now spans more than four decades and 18 albums, was honoured at a ceremony on Hollywood Boulevard on Tuesday, August 18, 2026 the 2,854th star dedicated on the famous walk, placed in the Recording category at 7011 Hollywood Boulevard. Ron Frierson, president and CEO of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, proclaimed the day "Angélique Kidjo Day" in Hollywood ahead of the unveiling.

"We Africans don't know what we've given to the world," the 66-year-old told the crowd. "Without us, there's no music possible on this planet." She then broke into song before dancing over her newly unveiled star, in a moment widely shared across entertainment outlets covering the event.

A ceremony of peers and tributes
The gathering drew film and music industry figures including Oscar-nominated actor Willem Dafoe, Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr., Benin-born actor Djimon Hounsou, and Nigerian star Adekunle Gold. Dafoe praised both Kidjo's stage presence and her humanitarian record, describing her as "the hardest-working woman in show business" and pointing to her Batonga Foundation, which supports girls' education and empowerment across Africa, as proof her activism is "not a token celebrity involvement" but an extension of her artistry. Walk of Fame producer Ana Martinez said Kidjo's "extraordinary artistry and global influence have inspired audiences across generations and continents."

Kidjo herself framed the honour as a marker of legacy rather than an endpoint. "This star is a permanent symbol; it's not going anywhere," she said, "but your legacy, it lives in the people that you've touched, that you've inspired, the barriers that you've broken."

What the honour represents
Kidjo was selected for the Walk of Fame's Class of 2026 one of 35 names announced by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, alongside figures such as Miley Cyrus, Timothée Chalamet and Shaquille O'Neal following a nomination and review process that drew hundreds of submissions. She becomes only the second African-linked name on the Walk of Fame after Charlize Theron, the white South African actress honoured in 2005, making Kidjo specifically the first Black African performer and first African musician to receive the distinction in the Walk's history.

Her catalogue spans Afropop, jazz, funk and world music, with collaborators including Burna Boy, Philip Glass, Sting, Alicia Keys, Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers. Beyond her five Grammy Awards, Kidjo has been named among Time magazine's 100 most influential people, nominated as one of Africa's 50 most iconic figures by the BBC, and listed among the 100 most inspiring people in the world. She has also won the Polar Music Prize and written a bestselling memoir, Spirit Rising, with a foreword by Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

The recognition arrives as Kidjo continues an active creative run, having released her 2026 album HOPE!!, which features contributions from Pharrell Williams, Nile Rodgers and Quavo among others a title she has said carries personal weight tied to her late mother's outlook on life.

Why it matters for the continent
For African commentators and cultural observers, the significance of Kidjo's star extends beyond her individual accolades. It lands at what industry figures are calling a defining moment for African music's global reach, as artists from across the continent from Afrobeats to Amapiano increasingly shape mainstream audiences worldwide.

Kidjo's honour is being read as both a personal culmination and a symbolic marker of that broader movement: proof, in the words of the artist herself, that the continent's contribution to the world's music has finally been given its permanent place on one of the industry's most visible landmarks.
