Government to procure 100 new ambulances in 2027 — Health Minister

The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has announced that the Government will procure 100 new ambulances for the National Ambulance Service (NAS) in 2027 to strengthen pre-hospital emergency healthcare services across the country.

He said the procurement would increase the operational capacity of the Service and improve access to emergency medical care.

The Minister made this announcement at the Ministry of Health’s High-Level Mid-Year Review Retreat held in Ho in the Volta Region.

Mr Akandoh disclosed that 30 ambulances recently retrieved from the Ghana Air Force Base at Burma Camp and handed over for refurbishment would be added to the national ambulance fleet after rehabilitation.

The Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to enhancing emergency medical services and revealed that the planned acquisition of 100 ambulances will significantly boost the operational capacity of the National Ambulance Service and improve access to emergency care nationwide.

He said additional funding would also be provided to repair and maintain existing ambulances to ensure that more vehicles remained roadworthy and available for emergency response.

He called on stakeholders to expedite work on the Legal Instrument (LI) for the National Ambulance Service, saying the instrument would provide the regulatory framework needed to guide the operations and development of the Service.

The National Ambulance Service was represented at the retreat by its Board Chairman, Nana Baffour Kotei Kutin Sraman II, and the Chief Executive Officer, Dr (Med) George Kojo Owusu.
