Romania's Ministry of National Defence says a Spanish Air Force F-18 fighter jet shot down a drone that breached the country's airspace close to its border with Moldova and Ukraine, in the latest incident underscoring the pressure NATO's eastern-flank states face from the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.

How the Incident Unfolded
According to the ministry, surveillance systems detected an aerial target entering Romanian airspace at 04:44 local time on Sunday, roughly 24 kilometers north of the south-eastern city of Galati, coming from the direction of the Republic of Moldova. An F/A-18 Hornet on air-policing duty out of the 57th Air Base at Mihail Kogalniceanu, already airborne and in surveillance mode, established radar contact with the target and received authorization to engage. The drone was destroyed at 05:01 local time, about 17 minutes after it was first picked up on radar.

Debris Fell in an Uninhabited Area
The ministry said the probable point of impact for the drone's wreckage lies between the villages of Baleni and Cudalbi in Galati county, in an unpopulated area. No injuries or damage to property were reported, and the air alert issued for the county was lifted at 05:20. Authorities have not officially confirmed the drone's type or operator, though NATO military headquarters spokesman, U.S. Army Colonel Martin O'Donnell, said the drone "appears to be Russian," even as details remain under investigation.

Part of a Wider Pattern on NATO's Eastern Flank

Romania shares a roughly 614-kilometre (381-mile) land border with Ukraine and has recorded repeated airspace violations by drones over the past four years, alongside floating mines in the Black Sea that threaten key trade and energy routes. This is reported to be the fourth drone brought down over Romanian territory this year. In July, Romanian F-16 pilots shot down three drones on three consecutive days, the first such engagements inside the country's airspace; one was identified as a Shahed-type drone, prompting Bucharest to expel a Russian diplomat and recall its ambassador from Moscow. In May, a drone strike injured two people after hitting a residential building in Galati.

The incident also follows closely on the heels of a similar interception over Latvia on 14 August 2026, reinforcing concerns that Russian-linked drone incursions are becoming a recurring test of NATO's eastern air defenses.
