Ghana, Jamaica can unlock new investment opportunities together — Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed confidence that stronger economic cooperation between Ghana and Jamaica will create new investment opportunities and deepen trade relations between the two countries.

The President made the remarks during his official visit to Jamaica, where he is holding bilateral talks with Prime Minister Andrew Holness as part of efforts to strengthen Ghana's ties with Jamaica and the wider Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

The four-day visit is expected to advance cooperation in trade, investment, culture, South-South collaboration and reparations, while positioning Ghana as a gateway for CARICOM's engagement with Africa.

"We discussed bringing Jamaican and Ghanaian business people together. I think that that is one sure way to begin cross investments between our countries. There are many opportunities that exist here in Jamaica, and there are many opportunities that exist in Ghana," President Mahama said on Monday, August 3, during a press briefing.

He noted that both countries share the ambition of becoming economic hubs in their respective regions, adding that closer collaboration would boost investment as well as the movement of people and services between Accra and Kingston.

The President said he would engage Jamaican business leaders during a trade and investment meeting to showcase opportunities in Ghana, particularly the advantages offered by the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

"You are able to produce or manufacture in one country and export to the other 54 countries. That creates a market of 1.4 billion people with a GDP of almost $3 trillion, and so that opportunity is available," he stated.

President Mahama praised the symbolic significance of Ghana's military assistance to Jamaica in the past, describing it as a demonstration of solidarity between two brotherly nations and expressing optimism for even closer cooperation in the years ahead.
