Ada State is set to host the 89th edition of the annual Asafotufiami Festival, with this year’s celebration doubling as the launch of activities marking the 50th anniversary of the installation of Djetse Nene Abram Kabu Akuaku III, Paramount Chief of the Ada Traditional Area and President of the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs.
The festival, regarded as one of Ghana’s most prominent traditional events, draws thousands of participants each year for its cultural displays, brass band performances, and musketry processions.
Officials say the 2026 edition will deviate from some of its traditional rites. Although the customary Thursday and Friday rituals will not be fully observed, selected chiefs will still visit the sacred forest Aplenayɛ at Luhuese. Rituals at Kpomkpoanya, including the traditional fetching of water from the Volta River basin, will continue as usual.
Saturday’s march‑past and grand durbar at the Presbyterian Park will serve as the official launch of the Paramount Chief’s 50‑year milestone.
The regular Sunday durbar church service, Monday canoe regatta, fun games, and the beach party at Lolonyakopey in Ada Foah will also be held.
Ahead of the festival, the annual Ada Youth Summit is scheduled for 31 July. Organisers say the event will convene youth from across Ghana to discuss leadership and participation in national and traditional governance. Convener Seth Priceless Ala‑Amegavie says the summit will feature speakers from leading entrepreneurial sectors.
Queen Mother of the Adibiawe Clan, Naana Adiki I, has extended a welcome to all natives and visitors, urging the youth to conduct themselves responsibly throughout the festivities.
The 2026 Asafotufiami Festival is expected to attract large crowds as Ada marks both its cultural heritage and a historic leadership milestone.
