Rawlings was a symbol of African leadership, patriotism — Gabon President

Gabonese President Brice Oligui Nguema has paid glowing tribute to Ghana's late former President Jerry John Rawlings, describing him as an enduring symbol of patriotism, visionary leadership and Africa's quest for unity and development.

President Oligui Nguema made the remarks on Thursday, July 30, after laying a wreath at the graveside of the former Ghanaian leader at the Military Cemetery in Accra during his official visit to Ghana.

The wreath-laying ceremony formed part of activities to honour the memory of President Rawlings and reaffirm the longstanding diplomatic ties between Ghana and Gabon.

Paying tribute to the late statesman, President Oligui Nguema commended Rawlings for his immense contribution to Ghana's development and his unwavering commitment to the advancement of the African continent.

He described the former Ghanaian leader as a statesman whose vision and dedication earned him a lasting place in Africa's history.

“In this place of remembrance, I would like to hail the contribution of this great man to a strong Africa, a united Africa, resolutely turned towards its own development,” he said.

The Gabonese President noted that Rawlings' unwavering pursuit of justice, good governance and national development continues to inspire leaders and young Africans across the continent.

He further acknowledged the influence of the former President's speeches and writings on governance and democratic transitions, revealing that they served as a source of inspiration during Gabon's recent political transition.

Former President Jerry John Rawlings served as Ghana's Head of State and later President from 1981 to 2001. He played a pivotal role in the country's return to constitutional rule in 1992 and remained an influential advocate for good governance, accountability and African development until his passing in 2020.
