Several schoolchildren injured after tipper truck crashes into school bus on Dzorwulu–Accra Mall road

Several lower primary school pupils sustained injuries after a tipper truck crashed into a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus transporting about 11 children along the Dzorwulu–Accra Mall stretch in Accra.

The children were reportedly returning from an excursion when the accident occurred.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), in a video shared on its Facebook page, confirmed that the collision involved the tipper truck and the school bus.

Eyewitnesses told Citi News that one of the children is receiving intensive care at the Police Hospital, while the remaining 10 are being treated at the 37 Military Hospital.

Assistant Divisional Officer I (ADO I) Alex King Nartey of the GNFS said preliminary information indicates that the tipper truck rammed into the rear of the Sprinter bus, although the exact cause of the crash has not yet been established.

“This is the Fiesta Royale to Accra Mall stretch, where a tipper truck has run into a minibus containing children,” he said.

Images and videos from the scene showed the force of the impact, with the school bus extensively damaged. Blood stains were visible inside the vehicle, while a child's school bag was seen among the wreckage.

ADO I Nartey said officers from the GNFS National Headquarters Rescue Team were deployed to the scene to assess the situation and assist in separating the two vehicles.

“It looks like it is a Sprinter bus that was containing school children. It is believed that they had gone for an excursion, and this is the level of the impact,” he added.

Authorities have yet to officially confirm the total number of casualties, the conditions of the injured children, or whether any deaths have been recorded.

Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the accident as emergency responders continue work at the scene.
