Sedina Tamakloe’s acquittal: 'Defence team happy with Court of Appeal ruling' — Lead counsel

Lead counsel for former Chief Executive Officer of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu, Enoch Deegbe, says the defence team is pleased with the Court of Appeal’s decision to acquit and discharge his client.

Mr Deegbe made the comment after the Court of Appeal overturned Ms Tamakloe-Attionu’s conviction and sentence on Thursday, July 30, after ruling that the prosecution failed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt.

The lawyer said the defence team would wait for the full judgment before making further comments on the court’s decision and possible next steps.

"We thank the Lords for their erudite reasoning. However, we just wait for the entire judgment. The Lords have said that the judgment will be ready by close of today, so we can get copies of the judgment, peruse it, and then we can make comments subsequently," he stated.

The lawyer explained that the appeal was based on three main grounds, including the argument that the charge sheet against Ms Tamakloe-Attionu was defective, there was no proper prima facie determination against her, and that the trial court’s judgment was flawed.

The Court of Appeal, in its ruling, upheld the defence’s argument on the defective charge sheet, leading to the former MASLOC CEO’s acquittal and discharge.

The lawyer added that the defence team would meet with Ms Tamakloe-Attionu and assess the full judgment before deciding whether any further legal action, including possible civil action against the state, would be pursued.

Ms Tamakloe-Attionu was convicted in absentia by the Accra High Court in April 2024 on charges including causing financial loss to the state, stealing, money laundering and procurement-related offences.

She was later extradited from the United States and returned to Ghana on June 9, 2026, to begin serving a 10-year prison sentence before successfully appealing the decision.
