US donates $4 million in military equipment to strengthen Ghana Armed Forces

The United States has donated military equipment valued at $4 million to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) as part of efforts to enhance the country's defence and security capabilities.

The package includes protective gear, radar systems and training materials intended to strengthen the operational effectiveness of both the Ghana Army and the Ghana Navy, particularly in the areas of surveillance, communication and maritime security.

Announcing the donation, the United States reaffirmed its longstanding defence partnership with Ghana, describing the support as a demonstration of the two countries' shared commitment to addressing evolving security threats.

“The United States is proud to continue its longstanding security partnership with Ghana through the donation of $4 million in military equipment to the Ghana Armed Forces,” the statement said.

According to the US, the equipment is expected to improve the operational readiness of the Ghana Army and the Ghana Navy by enhancing their ability to conduct surveillance, maintain secure communications and respond effectively to security challenges.

“The equipment—including protective gear, radar systems and training materials—will support the Ghana Army and Ghana Navy in strengthening surveillance, communication, and operational capabilities,” it added.

The United States further stated that the donation reflects the strong cooperation between the two countries in advancing regional peace and security.

“This donation reflects our shared commitment to regional stability, maritime security, and addressing transnational threats,” the statement noted.

The latest assistance forms part of ongoing defence cooperation between Ghana and the United States aimed at improving the preparedness and operational capacity of the Ghana Armed Forces to respond to emerging security threats within Ghana and the wider West African sub-region.
