Create Herbal Nursing College Now — Dr. Amegashie Urges Gov’t to Fix Rising Nurse Joblessness

The Chief Executive Officer of Amagashi Herbal Hospital in Kumasi, Apostle Dr. Samuel Amegashie, has made a passionate appeal to the government to establish a Herbal Nursing College to train nurses and create employment opportunities within Ghana’s growing herbal and traditional healthcare sector.

According to him, the rising unemployment among trained nurses demands innovative solutions that expand career pathways beyond conventional health facilities.

Apostle Dr. Amegashie noted that thousands of nurses graduate every year with hopes of securing jobs in government and private orthodox hospitals, yet limited vacancies leave many qualified professionals unemployed.

He explained that a specialised herbal nursing college would equip graduates with the knowledge and practical skills needed to work effectively in licensed herbal hospitals and traditional medicine centres across the country.

He stressed that such an initiative would not only reduce nurse unemployment but also improve healthcare delivery within the herbal medicine sector by producing professionals trained specifically in herbal nursing and traditional healthcare practices.

Apostle Dr. Amegashie added that many licensed herbal hospitals are expanding their operations but often struggle to recruit personnel with the appropriate training in herbal healthcare, making the establishment of such institutions necessary.

He therefore called on the government, the Ministry of Health and relevant stakeholders to incorporate herbal nursing education into Ghana’s healthcare training system to complement existing nursing programmes.

He further appealed for a national framework that encourages collaboration between orthodox and licensed herbal hospitals to enhance healthcare delivery. He proposed a structured referral system where orthodox hospitals can refer patients to licensed herbal facilities when appropriate, and herbal hospitals can also refer patients requiring conventional medical care to orthodox institutions.

Such a system, he said, would promote an integrated healthcare model, widen treatment options and ensure patients receive care suited to their specific health needs.

Apostle Dr. Amegashie made the appeal during the commissioning of a new facility at the Amagashi Herbal Hospital at Suame Maakro in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.

The Chief of Nkwantakese, Nana Boakye Yam Ababio, who represented the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, urged Ghanaians to prioritise regular medical check‑ups and seek professional advice before taking any medication. He said early diagnosis and timely intervention remain the best approach to preventing diseases and improving health outcomes.

He commended the management of Amagashi Herbal Hospital for expanding its infrastructure and encouraged private healthcare providers to continue supporting government efforts to improve access to quality healthcare.

The newly commissioned facility is expected to enhance healthcare delivery and improve access to quality herbal medical services for residents of Kumasi and beyond.
