The historic town of Elmina, formerly known as Anomansa, came alive as chiefs, residents, tourists and dignitaries from across Ghana and beyond gathered to celebrate the 2026 Edina Bakatue Festival, one of the country's oldest and most revered traditional festivals.
Observed annually by the people of the Edina Traditional Area, the Bakatue Festival marks the ceremonial opening of the Benya Lagoon and the beginning of the traditional fishing season. The festival, deeply rooted in the history and customs of the people of Elmina, also serves as an occasion to offer thanksgiving for past blessings while seeking divine protection, peace and prosperity for the community and the fishing season ahead.
This year's celebration officially commenced on Tuesday, the main festival day, with traditional rites led by the Paramount Chief of the Elmina Traditional Area, Nana Kojo Conduah VI, and other traditional leaders. The day attracted a number of distinguished guests, including the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Accra led by His Excellency Pavel Bílek, delegates from the Republic of Suriname, the Municipal Chief Executive for the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem (KEEA) Municipality, Hon. Ismail Zagoon-Saeed, as well as several government officials, traditional rulers and invited guests.
The festivities continued throughout the week with a series of colourful cultural, entertainment and tourism activities that showcased the rich heritage of Elmina.
On Wednesday, the annual Miss Bakatue beauty pageant, hosted by Ahomka FM, celebrated the intelligence, beauty and cultural values of young women in the municipality.
Thursday featured the Elmina Dance Festival, organised by the Elmina Dance Academy, which brought together dancers, cultural performers and visitors for captivating performances highlighting Ghana's rich dance traditions and promoting cultural exchange.
Music lovers were treated to the MOE Concert on Friday, organised by the Checkzone Family. The concert featured exciting performances from various artistes and entertained hundreds of festival-goers, adding youthful energy to the celebrations.
The highlight of the week came on Saturday with the grand durbar of chiefs and people of the Edina Traditional Area. The colourful ceremony attracted thousands of spectators and was graced by the Ga Mantse, His Royal Majesty King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, President of the Ga Traditional Council, alongside traditional rulers, government officials, diplomats and other distinguished personalities. The durbar celebrated the unity, cultural identity and enduring traditions of the people of Elmina while strengthening ties between traditional authorities across Ghana.
The festival concluded on Sunday with the Hotwav Last Hour Concert, hosted by Hotwav Phones, bringing the week-long celebrations to a memorable close through thrilling musical performances and entertainment.
Beyond the colourful processions, cultural displays and entertainment, the 2026 Edina Bakatue Festival reinforced Elmina's reputation as one of Ghana's leading cultural and tourism destinations. The celebration once again highlighted the importance of preserving the rich traditions of Anomansa while promoting unity, economic growth and cultural tourism.
As visitors returned home with unforgettable memories, this year's festival reaffirmed the enduring significance of the Edina Bakatue Festival as a celebration of heritage, resilience and the vibrant spirit of the people of Elmina.
