President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the government is set to begin the procurement process for the construction of a new airport in Wa, a project aimed at enhancing transport infrastructure and unlocking the economic potential of the Upper West Region.
The President said the proposed airport forms part of the government's broader strategy to improve road, rail and air transport networks across the country while positioning the region as a key commercial and logistics hub.
Speaking during a courtesy call by the Upper West Regional House of Chiefs at the Jubilee House on Wednesday, July 8, President Mahama disclosed that the necessary documentation for the project has been submitted to the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) for approval to commence the procurement process.
“We are improving transport and logistics all over the country, including the railways, the roads, and air travel. And as you would have heard, we are currently about to go to the Public Procurement Authority for authorization to begin procurement for the new airport in Wa,” he said.
President Mahama noted that the Upper West Region occupies a strategic position as one of Ghana's gateways to the Sahel and said investing in modern transport infrastructure is essential to expanding trade, facilitating the movement of goods and people, and strengthening regional integration.
He expressed confidence that the new airport would improve connectivity, stimulate business and investment, and complement the government's wider infrastructure development agenda aimed at accelerating economic growth across the country.
