Minister for Education Haruna Iddrisu has cautioned governing councils of public universities against meddling in the daily management of tertiary institutions, stressing that such interference undermines effective governance.
Speaking at the commissioning of a new hostel facility at Wisconsin International University College at Feyiase in the Ashanti Region, he urged university councils to align their oversight roles with Ghana’s broader national development agenda while respecting the autonomy of institutional management.
The Minister emphasised that governing councils must collaborate with management rather than create unnecessary tension.
According to him, the smooth governance of tertiary institutions depends on a healthy, respectful working relationship between councils and management.
He warned that councils that attempt to undermine management will not receive government backing.
“We have improved the governance of our institutions of higher learning. As I stand here, Minister for Education, I don’t interfere with the council of any university and how the council supports the management of the institution. So to those councils that are worrying management, they should desist from that conduct. They don’t have my policy support.
“We expect the universities to be run effectively by councils and management. And we expect that the relationship between council and management would be one of collegiate atmosphere, that there is respect of council to management for the good of those institutions,” he said.
