Ghanaian shot dead in South Africa as tensions over anti-immigration protests persist

A Ghanaian national has been shot dead in South Africa amid heightened tensions following recent anti immigration protests in parts of the country, raising fresh concerns about the safety of foreign nationals.

The incident was confirmed to Citi News by Ghana's High Commissioner to South Africa, H.E. Benjamin Quashie, who said the deceased was a Ghanaian citizen. He, however, did not disclose the victim's identity or provide details surrounding the shooting.

South African authorities are yet to determine whether the killing was connected to the anti immigration protests that intensified on Tuesday, June 30.

The shooting comes against the backdrop of growing unease among migrant communities as demonstrators in several parts of South Africa continue to call for stricter enforcement of immigration laws and the removal of undocumented foreign nationals.

The protests have triggered heightened security operations in affected areas and increased fears among many foreign residents.

In response to the situation, the Government of Ghana has intensified efforts to assist citizens who wish to return home through its voluntary repatriation programme.

According to Ghanaian authorities, more than 900 citizens have already been evacuated from South Africa, with additional repatriation flights expected next week as more Ghanaians express interest in returning home.

The Ghana High Commission has advised Ghanaians still living in South Africa to remain vigilant, avoid areas where demonstrations are taking place and maintain regular contact with the mission for updates and assistance.

Ghanaian authorities say they are closely monitoring developments and will continue engaging their South African counterparts to ensure the safety and welfare of Ghanaians living in the country while investigations into the fatal shooting continue.
