NHIA offers free health insurance registration for June 29 flood victims

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has announced free National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) registration for persons affected by the recent floods in Accra as part of measures to prevent a public health crisis.

The intervention comes amid growing concerns over rising cases of diarrhoea and cholera following the floods, which disrupted sanitation systems and contaminated water sources in several communities.

The free registration will also cover dependants of affected persons to ensure they can access healthcare without financial constraints.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, July 1, the NHIA said the initiative forms part of urgent efforts to protect public health in flood-affected communities.

"The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has announced free NHIS registration for all persons impacted by the recent floods including their dependants," the statement read in part.

The Chief Executive of the NHIA, Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, said the authority is committed to ensuring that victims of the disaster receive timely medical care as the risk of waterborne diseases continues to increase.

"No Ghanaian should be denied access to quality healthcare because of a natural disaster. With an imminent outbreak of diarrhoea and cholera following the floods, this free registration will ensure that victims and their families can seek timely treatment without financial burden," he noted.

The NHIA said the initiative is intended to reduce barriers to healthcare and support the national response to the aftermath of the floods, particularly in communities at risk of disease outbreaks.
