Alhaji Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, the Minister for the Interior, said Monday's (June 29) torrential rains affected 38,802 people and displaced 7,761 households across the Greater Accra Region.
He said the floods inundated 25 communities within 18 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), disrupting economic and social activities of thousands of residents.
“Mr Speaker, when you put all these numbers together, we have a total of 7,761 households that were displaced with 38,802 individuals affected with seven persons still missing as of this morning,” the Minister said.
Alhaji Mohammed-Mubarak made the remarks on Tuesday on the Floor of Parliament when he updated the House.
According to the Minister, Ga East emerged as one of the worst affected, with 2,000 people displaced from 400 households, six persons reported missing and five confirmed deaths.
He cited other heavily impacted assemblies to include: Krowor where 6,500 persons were displaced from 1,300 households; Tema Metropolitan had 3,601 displaced persons from 721 households; Tema West, 3,450 displaced persons from 690 households, with three fatalities.
“Mr Speaker, Ayawaso Central, had 3,021 displaced persons from 605 households, one missing and three deaths, Okaikwei North: 2,620 displaced persons from 524 households; Weija-Gbawe: 2,500 displaced persons from 500 households.
“Ga West: 2,300 displaced persons from 460 households; Ga South: 2,100 displaced persons from 420 households; La Dade-Kotopon: 2,020 displaced persons from 404 households and Adenta: 1,850 displaced persons from 370 households,” he said.
Alhaji Mohammed- Mubarak, also the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Asawase told the House that Ledzokuku recorded 1,200 displaced persons, 240 households and one death, while Ablekuma North, Okaikwei South, and Kpone-Katamanso also reported significant displacements, with no deaths recorded in Ga Central, Ga West, Ablekuma North, Ga South, Adenta, Okaikwei South, Okaikwei North and Kpone-Katamanso.
The Minister said emergency response agencies remained on the ground conducting rescue, relief and recovery operations in the flood-affected communities.
He, explained that the figures come as National Disaster and Management Organisation (NADMO), the security services and other agencies continued to assess damage and provide support to displaced families.
Monday's heavy rains submerged homes and businesses, shut down major roads, and forced many families to flee.
Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant, avoid flood-prone areas, and comply with safety directives as the recovery effort continues.
It displaced more than 7,700 households and left 12 people dead, with seven others still unaccounted for across the Greater Accra Region, the Minister told Parliament.
