Reports that NDC National Chairman Hon. Johnson Asiedu Nketiah is eyeing the presidency have sparked heated debate. “General Mosquito”, as he is affectionately called, is the most feared party strategist of his generation. He rebuilt the NDC, survived internal wars, and became the man every flagbearer consults. But the presidency is a different battlefield.

History is clear: most great men fall at the tail end when caution is abandoned. The national stage magnifies weaknesses and weaponizes old statements. For Chairman Nketiah, this bid is only two things — the greatest hit of his life, or the greatest disappointment. There is no middle ground.

He has already achieved what few politicians will: he turned the NDC into an election-winning machine and defined political organization in the Fourth Republic. That is legacy. The presidency can immortalize it, or reduce 30 years of strategy to “what if”.

If the goal is to secure the party’s future, there are paths to power that don’t require betting everything on one ballot. Kingmakers often shape more presidencies than presidents themselves.

Great men know when to strike. Greater men know when to hold. Don’t gamble with what you have achieved. Ghana will remember you either way. The only question is how.
