Alleged state-sponsored arrests: 'Security agencies now taking orders from Jubilee House' — Ishaq Ibrahim

A member of the national communications team of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ishaq Ibrahim, has accused the government of using state security agencies to intimidate opposition figures.

According to him, recent arrests involving members of the NPP show the lack of operational independence of the country’s security institutions.

His comments follow the detention of the NPP’s Agona West Constituency Organiser, David Essandoh, over a social media post relating to dumsor.

They also come amid the remand of NPP Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe in a case involving publication of false news and offensive conduct conducive to the breach of peace.

Speaking on Accra-based GHOne TV on Thursday, May 14, Ishaq Ibrahim alleged that some state security institutions now act based on directives from the seat of government.

“They have no operational independence. They take phone calls from higher places such as the Jubilee House to act,” he claimed.

He argued that issues relating to alleged contempt or misconduct should primarily be handled by the courts rather than through security interventions.

“If it rises to the level of contempt, the court would handle it,” he stated, referring to Abronye's alleged insult of a High Court Judge.

The NPP communicator further asserted that the increasing involvement of security agencies in politically sensitive matters could undermine public confidence in democratic governance and the independence of state institutions.
