Tanzania's Zanzibar to raise minimum wage for public servants from 2027

DAR ES SALAAM, May 1 (Xinhua/GNA) — Tanzania’s Zanzibar President, Hussein Ali Mwinyi, on Friday announced an increase in the minimum monthly wage for public servants, from 300,000 Tanzanian shillings (about 115 U.S. dollars) to 500,000 shillings, effective January 2027.

Mwinyi made the announcement during celebrations, marking International Workers’ Day held at the Kizimbani Agricultural Exhibition Grounds in the Urban West Region on Unguja Island.

He said the wage adjustment, takes into account the country’s economic conditions, the rising cost of living, and the need to motivate workers to enhance productivity.
Mwinyi also highlighted the establishment of a health insurance fund, covering all workers and their families as part of broader welfare reforms.

In addition, he announced that the government has allocated 7,500 new employment opportunities for the 2026/2027 fiscal year, as part of ongoing efforts to improve livelihoods and expand job access.
