The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has revealed that government released a staggering GHS 5 billion to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies in 2025, a sharp leap from the GHS 362 million disbursed in 2024.
He explained that the funds were rolled out in quarterly tranches to fast-track development projects across the country, signalling what he described as a deliberate push to strengthen local governance and infrastructure delivery.
Breakdown of the disbursement shows GHS 790.37 million released in the first quarter, GHS 1.46 billion in the second quarter, GHS 1.18 billion in the third quarter, and GHS 1.59 billion in the final quarter of the year.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series at the Jubilee House in Accra, the Minister stressed that the scale and consistency of the releases have already begun to transform communities, enabling assemblies to take on critical projects aimed at improving living standards.
He noted that the funding came with clear directives, requiring each assembly to construct at least two Community-based Health Planning and Services compounds, three classroom blocks, and 10 boreholes, while also completing stalled legacy projects.
In addition, 25 percent of the Common Fund was earmarked for the development of 24 hour economy model markets to stimulate local commerce.
According to him, the impact is already visible nationwide, with 494 CHPS compounds, 761 classroom blocks, 4,029 boreholes, and 2,755 legacy projects currently at various stages of completion.
He further disclosed that contracts have been awarded for 261 24 hour economy model markets, with construction already underway in several locations.
Mr Ibrahim emphasised that government remains focused on accelerating grassroots development, insisting that the increased funding must translate into tangible improvements in service delivery and infrastructure at the local level.
