The Volta Resistance Movement (VRM) has called on government to take immediate and decisive action to address the life-threatening conditions faced by schoolchildren in Avetakpo in the Ho West Constituency, where pupils are forced to cross a river daily to access education.
This follows a disturbing report highlighting how children in the community risk drowning as they swim across a river to attend school, particularly during the rainy season when water levels rise dangerously.
In a statement, the VRM described the situation as unacceptable and a clear reflection of neglect.
“No child should have to risk their life just to access education. This is not only an educational challenge but a humanitarian concern that requires urgent national attention,” said Delanyo Agbe, Spokesperson for the Volta Resistance Movement.
The Movement noted that the situation is already negatively affecting school attendance, as some pupils are unable or afraid to make the dangerous journey, while others arrive at school exhausted and distressed.
The VRM is therefore calling on the Government of Ghana, particularly the Ministry of Roads and Highways and the Ministry of Education, to urgently construct a bridge or provide a safe and reliable means for the children to cross.
“We cannot continue to speak about free and accessible education while children in parts of the Volta Region are left to face such dangerous barriers,” the statement added.
The Movement further appealed to local authorities, traditional leaders, development partners, and civil society organizations to support efforts aimed at resolving the situation and ensuring safe access to education for all children.
The VRM warned that failure to address such basic infrastructure challenges risks deepening inequality and undermining confidence in national development efforts.
“The safety, dignity, and future of our children must not be compromised. The Volta Resistance Movement will continue to advocate until urgent action is taken,” the statement concluded.
