One dead, three arrested after gun battle with Police in Akropong

A man has been killed following a prolonged gun battle with police during an operation connected to a chieftaincy dispute at Akwapim Akropong.

The deceased, identified as Kwasi Ansah Eku, also known as “Dragon,” is reported to have resisted arrest and opened fire on officers, triggering an exchange that lasted nearly two hours.

According to a police situational report, the operation was conducted in the early hours of April 10, 2026, by personnel from the Ghana Police Service’s Eastern Regional Police Intelligence Directorate, with support from the National Headquarters.

The exercise was part of efforts to apprehend individuals captured in videos allegedly linked to violent clashes during the Awukudae festival held on April 8.

Police said they announced their presence and called on the suspect to surrender, but he allegedly responded by firing multiple shots. Officers returned fire, leading to the extended exchange during which he was fatally shot.

A pump-action gun, along with spent and live AA cartridges, was retrieved from the scene.

Three other suspects were arrested during the operation. They have been identified as Bright Ofori Asante, also known as “Bonto,” 33; Kwame Ayeh, also known as “Saboba,” 41; and Elvis Adjei, 19.

Police say the suspects were identified in footage linked to the earlier disturbances and are also accused of obstructing police operations.

They have since been transferred to Koforidua to assist with investigations, while the body of the deceased has been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.

The incident underscores rising tensions associated with chieftaincy disputes in the area, as authorities intensify efforts to restore order and hold those involved in recent violence accountable.
