Anti-gay bill: Mahama and NDC are first-class scammers — Ahiagbah

The National Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has criticised President John Dramani Mahama over what he described as double standards on the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill.

He accused the President and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of misleading Ghanaians on their commitment to the controversial legislation.

The comments follow the President’s recent indication that addressing basic needs will take priority over the bill.

The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill has remained a major political issue in Ghana, drawing strong opinions from political parties, religious groups and civil society.

Both the NPP and NDC have taken shifting positions on the bill at different times, especially during election campaigns.

Speaking at an engagement with civil society organisations at the Jubilee House on March 30, President Mahama suggested that his government would focus on pressing socio-economic challenges rather than prioritising the bill.

Reacting in a social media post on Wednesday, April 1, Ahiagbah argued that the President’s latest position contradicts earlier assurances given to Ghanaians.

“President John Dramani Mahama and the NDC are first-class scammers. They deceived the clergy and Ghanaians into believing they are anti-LGBTQ to win political power,” he stated.

The opposition party's spokesperson described the shift as dishonest and urged religious leaders to speak out against what he called political inconsistency.

“Now, as President Mahama claims, Anti-LGBTQ+ is not a priority… This is dishonesty on steroids,” he added.

Ahiagbah stressed that the governing party must be held accountable for its campaign promises, adding that the change in stance raises concerns about credibility and trust in leadership.
