Where Water Flows, Equality Grows: MLI Calls for Urgent Action on Water and Gender in Ghana

Accra, Ghana – March 22, 2026 - As the world marks World Water Day 2026 under the theme “Water and Gender” and the campaign slogan “Where Water Flows, Equality Grows,” Meaningful Life International (MLI) is calling for renewed national and global commitment to closing Ghana’s rural water gap, especially for women and girls who bear the greatest burden of water insecurity.

Access to safe water is not only a public health issue, it is also a gender equality issue. In many rural communities across Ghana, women and girls spend hours each day walking long distances to fetch water, often from unsafe sources shared with animals or polluted by illegal mining activities. This daily struggle limits educational opportunities, economic participation, and overall well-being.

“When a community gains access to clean water, women regain time, girls return to school, and families thrive. Water is dignity, and dignity must be equal,” said Dr. Kofi Ahlijah, Executive Director of MLI.

MLI’s 20 Years of meaningful Impact, Refreshing lives, Transforming Communities

For nearly two decades, Meaningful Life International (MLI), a Ghana-based NGO headquartered in Tema, has been at the forefront of addressing water inequality in underserved communities. Since its founding in 2006, MLI has:

• Drilled over 80 boreholes across 92 rural communities
• Improved access to potable water for thousands of households
• Reduced exposure to waterborne diseases
• Empowered communities through hygiene education and local water governance systems

MLI’s approach goes beyond infrastructure. Each borehole project includes the formation of community-led water management committees, which ensure sustainability, accountability, and local ownership. MLI emphasises that achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) cannot happen without addressing gender inequality.

Despite progress, disparities remain stark. While urban access to safe water continues to improve, rural communities lag significantly behind. Women and girls are disproportionately affected, often sacrificing education and income opportunities to secure water for their families.

In line with the World Water Day theme, MLI is launching a renewed call for partnerships with:

• Corporate Ghana
• Development partners and donors
• Faith-based organisations
• Media institutions

to support its ambitious 100-borehole initiative, aimed at expanding access to clean water while promoting gender equality and community empowerment.

“No Ghanaian should drink from a pit. This is not just a vision,it is an achievable goal if we act collectively,” Dr Kofi Ahlijah added.

MLI believes that investing in water is investing in women, health, education, and national development.
