The Director General of the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA), Dr Kamal-Deen Ali, has stressed that maritime security remains the foundation of Ghana’s progress in the shipping industry.

He made the remarks on Tuesday, in Accra, at a high-level technical workshop jointly organised by the GMA and the Danish Maritime Authority (DMA) to align Ghana’s green ambitions with the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) Net-Zero Framework.

Dr Ali noted that the transition to a sustainable maritime sector requires significant capital. Industry experts at the event called for the creation of a dedicated Shipping Finance Fund to support the fleets needed for regional trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

The workshop also emphasised Ghana’s entry into a select group of nations receiving support to establish zero-emission maritime routes.

The Danish Ambassador to Ghana, Jakob Linulf, described the partnership between the two countries as one that goes beyond dialogue to mobilising resources for the global energy transition.

He assured that Denmark’s collaboration with Ghana will ensure no country is left behind in the shift toward greener shipping.
