NDC gov’t doing more for cocoa farmers than NPP did — Ama Pratt

Press Secretary to Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, Ama Pratt, has pushed back on claims that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government has been unfair to cocoa farmers.

Critics say the administration, which promised to increase farmgate prices to GHS6,000, has failed to deliver.

The criticisms have intensified after the recent reduction in farmgate prices by about 28%, which government officials attribute to a drop in global cocoa prices.

Speaking on Accra-based Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana show on Tuesday, February 17, Ama Pratt said the government has ensured that farmers are still benefiting.

“The NDC’s position when in opposition and even today is that, in terms of percentages, give more to the farmer. Let’s do 70% for the farmer. Government will take 30%,’” she said.

She added that even though exchange rate fluctuations affect the final figures, the government’s intention remains to favour farmers.

“The truth is that this government is doing more in favor of the farmer than the NPP did based on facts,” Ama Pratt emphasized.

This comes amid growing debate over cocoa pricing and the challenges posed by international market volatility.
