The National Labour Commission (NLC) has obtained an interlocutory injunction from the High Court restraining four tertiary education unions from continuing what it describes as an unlawful strike.
The affected unions are the Senior Staff Association – Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), the Teachers and Educational Workers Union of the Trades Union Congress (TEWU of TUC), the Federation of University Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG), and the Technical Universities Administrators Association of Ghana (TUAAG).
On Tuesday, February 3, SSA-UoG, FUSSAG and TEWU declared an indefinite strike, accusing the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission of unilaterally altering agreed conditions of service. The industrial action has disrupted activities across several public universities.
The dispute centres on unpaid Tier Two pension contributions and other outstanding financial obligations owed to senior staff. The unions are also protesting the replacement of overtime allowances with a “call-in allowance,” which they argue contravenes a 2021 agreement and undermines the rights and expectations of university employees.
According to the NLC, the court order, granted on Friday, February 13, 2026, directs the executives, officers, members, agents and employees of the unions to immediately suspend the strike. The order further restrains them from continuing the industrial action pending the determination of the case.
The Commission said it remains committed to promoting and sustaining a peaceful and harmonious industrial relations climate in accordance with Ghana’s labour laws.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, had earlier appealed to SSA-UoG to call off the strike following the payment of GH¢396 million in Tier Two pension arrears on February 10. He indicated that an additional GH¢600 million is currently being processed and urged the unions to reconsider their stance in the interest of students and the academic calendar.
