The Pan African Business Forum (PABF) has called on African nations to unite in supporting Libya’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, emphasizing the country’s historical leadership and ongoing efforts toward national renewal.
In a statement issued from its Accra headquarters by the Vice President Dr. Oscar Ugoh, LLB, MPSI, the Forum described Libya as more than just a candidate, but as a representation of Africa’s founding principles and commitment to global peace. The PABF urged countries, particularly those in West Africa, to rally behind Libya as the African Union prepares to deliberate on the endorsement.
Ghana’s Role Highlighted
The PABF praised Ghana’s diplomatic engagement with Libya, noting the work of Hanna Serwaa Tetteh, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Libya, as instrumental in supporting a “Libyan-led and Libyan-owned” political process. Endorsing Libya, the Forum argued, would reinforce Ghana’s commitment to African solutions for African challenges and strengthen the UN’s roadmap toward a unified Libyan government.
Liberia’s Solidarity Cited
The statement also referenced Liberia’s journey from conflict to democratic resilience, noting the country’s own campaign for a UN Security Council seat for 2026–2027. The Forum emphasized that backing Libya would demonstrate continental solidarity and amplify the voices of nations emerging from fragility, fostering cooperation between Libya and Liberia on global security matters.
Libya’s Credentials for the Council
The PABF outlined three key pillars supporting Libya’s candidacy:
Foundational Leadership: Libya hosted the historic Sirte Declaration of 1999, which laid the groundwork for the African Union, and has maintained 33 years of continuous AU membership.
Commitment to Global Norms: Libya is a signatory to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, underscoring its adherence to international security standards.
Investment in the Future: The country is pursuing national dialogue, political stabilization, and economic revitalization, signaling a trajectory of constructive engagement on the global stage.
“The choice before Africa is clear: continuity and principle versus interruption and contradiction. We urge Ghana, Liberia, and all African nations to endorse Libya,” the Forum stated, calling for a unified and principled African voice in the Security Council.
