Faith-Based Religion Turned Fear-Based

Religion is meant to connect humanity to its Maker, guide individuals toward moral uprightness, and cultivate peace within oneself and with others—ultimately leading to eternal life. Its purpose is not to terrify but to liberate, uplift, and empower people to live meaningful, purposeful lives.

The apostles in the Bible exemplified true religion by caring for one another and responding to the needs of the distressed. Their mission brought comfort, not anxiety; support, not intimidation.

Today, however, the landscape of religion has shifted. Modern religious practice increasingly instills fear and panic in followers and even in the broader society. Many religious leaders have positioned themselves at the center of their faith communities, becoming, in effect, objects of worship. They build religious empires around their personalities, projecting themselves as all-knowing and all-powerful. Followers consult them on every matter, and fear is often used as the glue that keeps people dependent and attached.

In earlier times, such fear-driven manipulation was associated with sorcerers, magicians, and occultists—figures who demanded secrecy and warned of dire consequences for disobedience. Today, similar tactics appear in some religious circles, where loved ones are demonized and divisions are sown, contradicting the core commandment to “love one another.”

Prophecies have become the centerpiece of many religious gatherings, often dominated by messages of death, doom, and dread. Positive, hope-filled visions of the future are rare. Instead of inspiring people to pursue righteousness, the message becomes a threat: “Stop sinning or perish.” Instead of encouraging fidelity in marriage, the focus shifts to warnings: “If you commit adultery…” Heaven, once preached as a place of joy, is overshadowed by vivid portrayals of hell as a place of torment.

Religion, at its best, should strengthen faith and dispel fear. Yet today, it often breeds anxiety, panic, and unhealthy dependence on religious leaders. Many people now hesitate to attend worship centers for fear of extortion, humiliating “naked” prophecies, public embarrassment, or bullying from those in authority. The charity once associated with religion has, in some cases, been replaced by charlatanism.

May we return to the old path—where faith builds, love binds, and religion liberates.
