Newmont has denied reports linking the pollution of the River Tano in the Tano North Municipality of the Ahafo Region to activities at its Ahafo North mine, describing the claims as inaccurate and misleading.
The company said it became aware of recent reports alleging that its mining operations were responsible for the pollution of the river. Newmont stated that these assertions are unfortunate and incorrect.
In response, the company said it is working closely with relevant stakeholders to conduct field visits and thorough investigations into its mining operations and environmental management practices. These investigations have included interviews, site inspections, and reviews of operational documents.
Newmont disclosed that one of the investigations was jointly conducted by the Water Resources Commission and the Environmental Protection Agency. In addition, youth leaders and Assembly members from the mine’s host communities undertook an independent field visit and later made their findings public, indicating that they found no evidence linking Newmont’s operations to pollution of the Tano River.
The company stressed that its operations do not pollute the River Tano and said it adheres to the highest environmental and water management standards, often exceeding legal and regulatory requirements.
Newmont reaffirmed its commitment to cooperating fully with all investigative bodies examining the source of the pollution, while maintaining its dedication to responsible mining and environmental stewardship within the Tano North Municipality.
