The Communications Director of the United Party (UP), Solomon Owusu, has rejected the authenticity of a medical letter attributed to the Mayo Clinic, which claimed former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta had prostate cancer.
Speaking on Joy News, Mr Owusu described the document as fraudulent and said he is taking steps to report the matter to the US Embassy.
“That is another criminal letter and I’m in the process of reporting that hospital to the US embassy,” he stated. “We cannot be in a country where people will sit somewhere and use an institution’s name to dupe the people.”
According to him, the claims contained in the letter have been disproved.
“They were lying, absolutely, and this has been proven,” he added.
The letter in question, dated May 14, 2025, and attributed to the Mayo Clinic in the United States, claimed that Mr Ofori-Atta had been diagnosed with prostate cancer.
It was allegedly issued by Dr Ahmed Abdalrhim of the Section of International Medicine in Rochester. The document stated that the former finance minister had undergone an MR-guided biopsy and required surgery.
“I am writing to inform you that Mr Ofori-Atta has undergone an MR-guided biopsy and has been diagnosed with prostate cancer,” portions of the letter read.
It further indicated that a surgical procedure had been scheduled for June 13, 2025, under the care of Dr Paras Shah of the Department of Urology.
“Following the procedure, Mr Ofori-Atta will require a recovery period before he is able to travel to his home country,” the letter added.
However, following Mr Ofori-Atta’s detention by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Mr Owusu insisted the letter was false.
Reacting on Joy Prime on Monday, January 12, 2026, he said the document was fabricated and damaged the credibility of the institution whose name was used.
“We cannot allow institutions to be dragged into falsehoods like this,” he stressed.
