Which rule did he break? – Solomon Owusu challenges ICE detention of Ofori-Atta

United Party Communications Director, Solomon Owusu, has questioned the grounds for the detention of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Speaking on Joy News, Mr Owusu outlined the standard reasons that could lead to visa revocation under US immigration laws.

“Look, ICE, if there is anything to go by, and I have no reason to doubt what the Attorney General is saying, before your visa will be revoked, it’s based on about four or five factors,” he said.

He listed fraud and misrepresentation as key reasons.

“Fraud or misrepresentation, where you made certain claims and immigration officers later find out that you lied,” he explained.

He also mentioned criminal activity as a possible cause.

“If you have engaged yourself in a criminal activity in the United States, then your visa can be revoked,” he stated.

Mr Owusu further pointed out that working illegally could also lead to sanctions.

“If you are holding a B2 visa, you are not supposed to be working,” he said. “If you are doing something that the visa does not permit, then that becomes a problem.”

He added that national security concerns could also affect a person’s admissibility into the US.

“You may also become inadmissible based on national security threats,” he noted.

Based on these factors, Mr Owusu questioned why Mr Ofori-Atta had been detained.

“So which of these factors has caused him to be in detention?” he asked.

His comments come in the wake of public discussions surrounding Mr Ofori-Atta’s arrest by ICE and the earlier medical letter claiming he was undergoing treatment in the US.

Mr Owusu said the public deserves clarity on the specific grounds for the former minister’s detention.
