Corruption is indeed killing us softly in an alarming rate without a trace ,thus it should be a concern for every levelled-minded person.
Undoubtedly, all institutionalized corrupt nations have very low life expectancy because corruption is the most cancerous and incurable disease in human history.
Indeed, corruption has claimed more lives in Ghana than what covid-19 did in the western world, but unfortunately, we pay no attention to it.
Statistically speaking, there are as almost, many retirement homes for the elderly people in one State in United States as there are hotels in Ghana.
By and large ,people are living longer on the other side of the Atlantic ocean, because their population is aging ,despite the stress factor and the consumption of fat and sugary saturated foods.
That is why their governments have designed a”bait” to lure and entice a workforce from this side of Atlantic ocean;with sweet incentives to work there. The US visa lottery system is designed to get a free and easily available labor -force of which it paid nothing to train.
In Africa ,people seem to have less stress ,but more happiness and more leisure time to burn, yet our life expectancy is hovering around 50- something years on this troubled planet. Why such a huge disparity? Mind you,it has nothing to do with poverty.
Yes, the standard of living is high in the western world, however there are more reasons as to why we have low life expectancy rate.
The main reason why our ‘life expectancy’ is very low is that we have deliberately institutionalised corruption in our lives. In other words, corruption has single-handedly claimed many lives prematurely in Africa because it has penetrated into every aspect of our short lives span.
The remnants of corruption are taking us into our grave prematurely across the landscapes of Africa because we eat , drink and sleep with corruption.
In Ghana, our potholed-ridden roads have become the nation’s graveyards because of corruption and its elder sister ( bribery). Regrettably, our major roads do not last more than two years and whatever happens after that is the contractors’ back case. That is why we can not stop wearing kuntukuni on every weekend.
Corruption has even invaded our electoral process by electing(more or less)the highest bidders ; who are also very cheesy on integrity, with credibility deficiencies.
If you still do not believe me then take a trip to our shipping harbours, court rooms,DVLA offices, food and Drug administration, hospitals’ wards, Standard Board's parlors and other government’s establishments---the physical evidences are all over the place.
So if we really want life longevity we need to get rid of corruption. Our lives longevity index will improve tremendously and astronomically once we keep corruption and its sister at bay. Is that too much to ask from our leaders and policymakers?
Or am I just a lonely dreamer ?
Time alone will be the judge when things fall apart uncontrollably!
Stay Tuned!
